Hempseed-Source-omega-3-fatty-acids has been around for hundreds of years. Although often mistakenly associated with psychotropic effects, hempseed does not have any of those, and it is an excellent source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Those fatty acids have beneficial effects on health such as improving cardiovascular health. Preventing platelets aggregation, improving ischemic heart disease and so on.

In this article, we will present some health benefits of hemp seed, supported by research studies of course.

Health benefits

Hempseed has approximately 570 Kcal/ 100gr. Most of its calories come from fats (35.5gr/ 100gr), and the rest is from proteins (approx. 25gr/ 100gr). Carbs make just a fraction of hempseed nutritional value. The unique ratio between omega-6 and omega-6 fatty acids in hemp seed is what brings so many benefits to our health.

Effects on blood pressure

Hempseed-Source-omega-3-fatty-acids, According to the research, regular intake of omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids can lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients, while not affecting the blood pressure values in those within the normal range. This is a property most drug producers dream of because it means that hempseed fats selectively reduce increased blood pressure only in people who have hypertension. By regulating blood pressure, the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular diseases also drops. The omega-3 fatty acids are recommended as adjunct therapy for hypertension- beta blockers and diuretics combined with omega-3 fatty acids provide better blood pressure control [1].

Inflammation is an immune response that helps our body defend against different infections. As long as it’s under control, it’s good. Sometimes inflammation establishes itself as an endless process that continuously damages the tissues and cells in the body. It is considered that low-intensity inflammation contributes to the development of diabetes type 2 and some other metabolic diseases.

In 2013, a group of researchers published a study which presented evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can lower biomarkers of inflammation and put the metabolic syndrome under control [2]. In simple words, fatty acids found in hemp seed can prevent diabetes type 2. Also, fight off insulin resistance and interrupt the vicious cascade that leads obese people towards diabetes type 2.

Lipid profile of the blood

According to many research studies and guidelines of good clinical practice (recommendations doctors follow when treating their patients), patients with mild elevation of triglycerides can be successfully treated with omega-3 fatty acids [3]. The most significant advantage of hempseed over standard drugs is that hempseed does not have any side or adverse effects and it’s safe to use.
